As Lee sat on the airplane headed for the baseball game he had had to cover for the newspaper, the days events wouldn’t escape his mind. He went over every detail carefully. From the moment Laci jumped into the leaf pile for what he thought was just some innocent fun, to the confrontation later between Laci, Erin and Lee. He remembered how she apologized and pleaded for her job in an almost scripted way. He came to the conclusion that he should have been more firm about the whole thing and perhaps insisted that Laci be terminated. Erin wasn’t there to see how desperate Laci was when she revealed her feelings for him. The look in her eyes made him feel nervous at one point and he knew she was very serious about what she was revealing. Erin’s idea that it was simply a harmless crush may have been a premature judgment since she wasn’t actually present for the crazy confrontation.

The whole ordeal was creepy, and he decided that when he returned home he and Erin would further discuss whether to keep her as their nanny. Laci had worked for them for years and Lee knew deep down inside that he never he gave her any reason to think that they had anything more than a professional relationship. If anything he sometimes felt like a father figure since she had no family to speak of. The idea of this young girl wanting a romantic relationship with him was very unsettling to Lee.

As Lee walked into the lobby of his upscale hotel room after attending the baseball game, he was greeted by the concierge.
“Your name sir?” The concierge asked an obviously exhausted Lee.
“Lee Davis. I am with the Pleasantview Times.” He answered quickly.
“Oh yes, Mr. Davis. Your wife already arrived and is waiting in your room.” He replied smiling.
“You must be mistaken. I am staying here alone.” Lee replied matter of fact demeanor. “No sir, no mistake. She arrived an hour ago…” He answered slowly as he read through the paperwork again. “Oh my. I think it was suppose to remain a secret. Darn, my mistake. I’m sorry for ruining your surprise Mr. Davis.”
“I am telling you, this must be a mistake. My wife is hundreds of miles away on a work assignment. An error must have been made. I don’t want to barge in on an unsuspecting woman.” Lee replied becoming impatient.
“Sir, this is your wife’s name here on the registration is it not?” The concierge said cheerfully.
As Lee looked the paper over he realized that they couldn’t have possibly have known her name and information. This couldn’t be a mistake after all.
“Hmmm. I suppose she is here.” He answered happily, yet still confused. “I don’t know how she did it, but it’s a wonderful surprise. Don’t worry I’ll pretend I had no idea.”
“Thank you Mr. Davis. Enjoy your stay and have a good evening.”
As Lee walked to his room he couldn’t help feel tickled by the idea that Erin was waiting in the room. It would be just the two of them with no children. It had been a long time since they had the chance to go somewhere alone.
As he walked slowly into the door and saw a familiar pair of legs lounging comfortably on the bed, he peered around the door and was delighted to see Erin jump up and embrace him heartily.
“How did you do this?” Lee asked shocked to see her, grinning from ear to ear.
“I wanted to suprise you! After all that went on today I really wanted to be with you. I told my boss that it was an emergency and she undertsood completely. It actually is an emergency. We need more time together.” Erin replied with tears welling.
As Lee and Erin embraced, they didn’t notice the familiar stranger standing outside peering in through the window inconspicously. Laci had traveled all this way to see Lee and was furious to find Erin getting in the way again. She left quickly to go to her room to brainstorm her next move.
